Relations<br />

The Department in Tallinn was engaged<br />

in the following work during<br />

the preparation for the 1980 Olympics:<br />

it popularised the 1980 Olympic Regatta,<br />

in particular, with the means of<br />

visual propaganda as well as with the<br />

help of competitions, festivals and so<br />

on, popularised the cultural programme<br />

of the sailing regatta, published<br />

various information materials and official<br />

literature.<br />

Ninety special information editions<br />

were put out during the preparation<br />

for and holding of the Regatta. They<br />

were intended for members of the<br />

IOC, IYRU, NOCs, press, television and<br />

radio and for the official suppliers of<br />

the Organising Committee.<br />

Moreover, 16 kinds of official reference<br />

books and instructions dealing<br />

with the Olympic Regatta were published<br />

in a total of 44,000 copies, and<br />

six kinds of the Olympic souvenir<br />

posters in a total of 24,500 copies.<br />

Forty-two different special information<br />

brochures for the participants and<br />

officials were published during the<br />

Sailing Regatta in 75,000 copies.<br />

The works of the winners of the<br />

Tallinn Sails international photoexhibition<br />

were displayed at a special<br />

exhibition during the Regatta. Nearly<br />

4,000 photographs were sent to this<br />

competition from 20 countries.<br />

Another exhibition displayed 400 best<br />

souvenirs and drawings on sports<br />

subject made by the republic's students.<br />

A competition of Olympic<br />

souvenirs and drawings "Made by Us",<br />

to which 2,000 samples were sent, was<br />

held to select the best works.<br />

Sports events held under the<br />

motto "Olympiad for All!" during the<br />

preparations for the Regatta enjoyed<br />

great popularity in the republic. Nearly<br />

367,000 people took part in them.<br />

Competitions in various sports were<br />

held within these undertakings among<br />

school students in the republic along<br />

with the competition which helped to<br />

select participants for the Olympic<br />

torch relay along the streets of Tallinn.<br />

The Cultural Programme<br />

The Cultural Programme of the<br />

Olympic Sailing Regatta was held between<br />

June 28 and August 3, 1980.<br />

The best Estonian performing art<br />

groups, including amateur, took part<br />

in it. A total of 78 performances were<br />

given by the Tallinn theatres during<br />

this period. Theatre repertoires offered<br />

Russian and foreign classics and<br />

works by Soviet authors.<br />

Velje Tormis, the USSR State Prize<br />

Winner and People's Artist of the<br />

Estonian SSR, staged the "Estonian<br />

Ballads" ballet in time for the Regatta.<br />

Special note must be made of the<br />

concerts and performances which the<br />

State Academic Men's Chorus of the<br />

Estonian SSR, the model orchestra of<br />

the USSR Navy and other collectives<br />

gave at the Square of Ceremonies of<br />

the Yachting Centre.<br />

The amateur art groups gave over<br />

70 concerts and performances which<br />

were attended by 72,000 spectators.<br />

The total of more than 300 performances<br />

given in Tallinn within the<br />

framework of the cultural programme<br />

were attended by 270,000 spectators.<br />

Ten museums and eight various<br />

exhibitions were open during the Regatta<br />

in Tallinn.<br />

An exposition "Estonia from Ancient<br />

Times to Our Days" was<br />

mounted at the Museum of History of<br />

the Estonian SSR. The Estonian Merchant<br />

Marine Museum displayed an<br />

exposition devoted to the history of<br />

Yachting. The park-museum of folk<br />

architecture and everyday life, in<br />

which over 30 various concerts and<br />

performances were held, enjoyed<br />

great popularity.<br />

There were also two exhibitions:<br />

"Estonian Painting of the 40s-50s"<br />

and "Painting, Drawing and Sculpture<br />

of the Soviet Estonia of the 60s-70s".<br />

The exhibition "Flowers and Decorative<br />

Sculpture" evoked lively interest.<br />

The traditional Song Fête of Estonia<br />

was exceptionally successful.<br />

Some 627 groups numbering 27,000<br />

participants, took part in the republican<br />

Song Fête held in Tallinn on July<br />

4-6.<br />

The Folk Art Fête held on July<br />

24-26 received high praise. The folk<br />

dance ensembles and orchestras<br />

which took part in it gave five concerts.<br />

A Friendship Party devoted to the<br />

Opening of the Games of the 22nd<br />

Olympiad in Moscow was held on July<br />

19 at the Dynamo sports arena. A<br />

Friendship Party devoted to the Closing<br />

of the 1980 Olympic Regatta was<br />

held at the same arena on July 30.<br />

They were attended by nearly 6,000<br />

people.
