Preparations for the Closing Ceremony<br />

went ahead at the same time as<br />

those for the Opening Ceremony.<br />

While the Organising Committee<br />

took the experience of previous<br />

Games into account the scenario included<br />

many new and original features.<br />

The Closing Ceremony took place<br />

on August 3, 1980, in the Central<br />

Lenin Stadium strictly in keeping with<br />

the Olympic Charter.<br />

In the boxes of the western stands<br />

were leaders of the Soviet state, Lord<br />

Killanin, Honorary President of the<br />

IOC, Juan Antonio Samaranch, the<br />

newly-elected IOC President, and Ignati<br />

Novikov, President of the OCOG-<br />

80, members of the IOC, presidents<br />

and general secretaries of IFs and<br />

NOCs, Olympic gold medallists, Parliament<br />

Members from various countries,<br />

mayors of the capitals of many countries<br />

and members of the diplomatic<br />

corps.<br />

More than 100,000 Muscovites and<br />

visitors to the capital were in the<br />

stands of festively-decorated Lenin<br />

Stadium.<br />
