(c) If the number spelled out ends in the letters<br />

"th", the Arabic numeral is used followed immediately by the<br />

letter "th" Example: Fourth becomes 4th.<br />

(2) Dates and Military Grades. When abbreviating dates<br />

and military grades the following rules apply:<br />

(a) If the number spelled out ends in the letters<br />

"st", the Arabic numeral is used followed immediately by the<br />

letters "st" Example: First sergeant becomes 1stSgt.<br />

(b) If the number spelled out ends in the letters<br />

"nd", the Arabic numeral is used followed immediately by the<br />

letter "nd" Example: Second Lieutenant becomes 2ndLt.<br />

(c) If the number spelled out ends in the letters<br />

"th", the Arabic numeral is used followed immediately by the<br />

letter "th" Example: Twenty-fifth becomes 25th.<br />

k. Military organizations/Activities/U.S. Government and<br />

DoD Agencies<br />

(1) Puncuation and Spacing<br />

(a) Normally, punctuation (i.e., periods, commas,<br />

etc.) and spacing are not used with military abbreviations and<br />

acronyms; the letters are run together, without separation by<br />

space or punctuation. This run-together rule does not apply when<br />

abbreviations or acronyms include numbers of any kind - Roman,<br />

Arabic, or ordinal. Examples:<br />

III MEF 24th MEU 1st MarDiv USMC<br />

BLT 2/3 2d MAW COA HQMC<br />

7th Mar FMFPac I-IStf MARFORRES<br />

(b) As an exception to the above, when using<br />

abbreviations in naval correspondence and directives use a comma<br />

and a space between the different levels of command. Example:<br />

Co, 1st Bn, 5th Mar, 1st MarDiv, FMF.<br />

(c) When allotted space is restrictive for making an<br />

entry in the service record or when preparing certain NAVMC or<br />

other forms, the spacing between the numerical designation of the<br />
