4003 IRAM<br />

1. Scope of Instructions<br />

a. The DD Form 4 is the basic document establishing a legal<br />

relationship between the United States Government and the<br />

enlisted member of the Armed Forces. That document is used for<br />

all original enlistments and reenlistments (immediate,<br />

continuous, or broken) in the Marine Corps or Marine Corps<br />

Reserve. The instructions contained herein apply to the<br />

preparation and distribution of the DD Form 4 for immediate<br />

reenlistment in the Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve and<br />

certain reenlistment in the Marine Corps Reserve as a result of<br />

continuous or broken service as discussed in paragraph<br />

4003.4.<br />

b. Each Marine Corps recruiting station and/or Military<br />

Entrance Processing Station is responsible for original<br />

enlistments and reenlistments as a result of continuous or broken<br />

service into the Regular establishment, and original enlistments<br />

into the Reserve establishment.<br />

c. Reserve organizations are customarily responsible for<br />

prior service recruiting and reenlistments as a result of<br />

continuous or broken service in the Reserve establishment.<br />

Marine Corps Reserve organizations are guided by <strong>MCO</strong> P1100.72<br />

(MPPM ENLPROC) and <strong>MCO</strong> P1040R.35 (Marine Corps Reserve Career<br />

Planning Guide) for these purposes. Marine Corps commands in<br />

receipt of those publications using the instructions contained<br />

herein, may effect reenlistments into the Marine Corps Reserve as<br />

a result of continuous or broken service.<br />

2. General Instructions<br />

a. Use either a natural or all capitalization and spacing<br />

format in preparing the form. (The examples shown below are for<br />

a document typed in the natural capitalization format.) Do not<br />

mix methods of preparation. Type or word process the document<br />

using a ribbon which will produce black impressions capable of<br />

rendering each page of the document suitable for reproduction by<br />

photographic or other duplicating process. Ensure all copies are<br />

legible. All signatures and initials are required on the<br />

original only (removal of the carbons is required prior to<br />

signature and any required initials). Use black ink for<br />

signatures and initials. Take special care to ensure that<br />

required items are correctly completed without typewriter<br />

strikeovers. The Marine concerned and the reenlisting officer<br />
