For these thy lucid parts to men appear.<br />

To thee all dwellings, cities, tribes belong,<br />

Diffus'd thro' mortal bodies, rich and strong.<br />

Hear, blessed pow'r, to holy rites incline,<br />

And all propitious on the incense shine :<br />

Suppress the rage <strong>of</strong> fire's unweary'd frame,<br />

And still preserve our nature's vital flame.<br />

GREAT Escu~~~~us, skill'd to heal mankind,<br />

All-ruling Pzan, and physician kind ;<br />

Whose arts medic'nal can alone assuage<br />

Diseases dire, and stop their dreadful rage.<br />

fluctuating nature <strong>of</strong> bodies ; and hence, says Olympio-<br />

dorus, he operates with bellows, (EY $v~uis) which occultly<br />

signifies his operating in natures (arrr TOV ev Tars $voaur).<br />

This deity, also, as well as Mars, as Proclus observes, in<br />

Plat. Repub. p. 388, requires the assistance <strong>of</strong> Venus, in<br />

order that he may invest sensible effects with beauty, and<br />

thus cause the pulchritude <strong>of</strong> the world.<br />

Io2 This deity, as I have before observed, subsists in<br />

Apollo. Proclus, in his very elegant hymn to the Sun, says
