But the ruling Jupiter, who ranks as a principle, and<br />

who is coordinate with the three sons <strong>of</strong> Saturn, governs<br />

the third part <strong>of</strong> the whole <strong>of</strong> things, according to that <strong>of</strong><br />

Horn er,<br />

A triple distribution all things own.<br />

He is also the summit <strong>of</strong> the three, has the same name with<br />

the fontal Jupiter, is united to him, and is monadically<br />

called Jupiter. But the second is called dyadically, marine<br />

Jupiter, and Neptune. And the third is triadically deno-<br />

minated terrestrial Jupiter, Pluto, and Hades. <strong>The</strong> first <strong>of</strong><br />

these also preserves, fabricates, and vivifies summits, but<br />

the second, things <strong>of</strong> a second rank, and the third those <strong>of</strong><br />

a third order. Hence this last is said to have ravished<br />

Proserpine, that together with her he might animate the<br />

extremities <strong>of</strong> the universe.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Titannic order dividing itself from the connecting<br />

order <strong>of</strong> Heaven, but having also something in itself abiding,<br />

and connascent with that order, Saturn is the leader <strong>of</strong> the<br />

separation, and on this account he both arms others against<br />

his father, and receives the scythe 28 from his mother,<br />

through which he divides his own kingdom from that <strong>of</strong><br />

Heaven. But Ocean is coordinated with those that abide<br />

in the manners <strong>of</strong> the father, and guards the middle <strong>of</strong> the<br />

two orders ; so far as a Titan being connumerated with the<br />

Gods that subsist with Saturn ; but so far as rejoicing in<br />

a coordination with Heaven, conjoining himself with the<br />

Synoches. For it is fit that he who bounds the first and<br />

second orders should be arranged in the middle <strong>of</strong> the<br />

natures that are bounded. But every where this God is<br />

allotted a power <strong>of</strong> this kind, and separates the genera <strong>of</strong><br />

the Gods, the Titannic from the connecting (rwv ovvoxtxwv),<br />

and the vivific from the demiurgic. Whence also ancient<br />

rumour calls Ocean the God who separates the apparent<br />
