ADDITIONAL NOTES.<br />

THE following Additional Notes are given for the pur-<br />

pose <strong>of</strong> elucidating the Orphic theology, with which the<br />

preceding hymns are replete. <strong>The</strong>y form the greater<br />

part <strong>of</strong> the Scholia <strong>of</strong> Proclus on the Cratylus <strong>of</strong> Plato,<br />

a work inestimably valuable to the student <strong>of</strong> the Grecian<br />

theology, and which has been recently published with<br />

very valuable critical notes by the most learned Pro-<br />

fessor Boissonade. <strong>The</strong> following translation, however,<br />

was made by me many years ago from a manuscript <strong>of</strong><br />

this work, which is a copy <strong>of</strong> an original in the posses-<br />

sion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Heber, and which is so very rare that it is<br />

not to be found either in the Bodleian Library or the<br />

British Museum, nor, I believe, in any <strong>of</strong> the public<br />

libraries <strong>of</strong> Great Britain. I have given the translation<br />

<strong>of</strong> these Scholia in the order in which they occur in the<br />

original, as I could not have done otherwise without<br />

omitting some part <strong>of</strong> them, which, on account <strong>of</strong> their<br />

great importance, I was unwilling to do.<br />

JUPITER<br />

is not said to be, but is, the father <strong>of</strong> those who<br />

genuinely preserve the proper form <strong>of</strong> life, such as Her-<br />

cules and the Dioscuri ; but <strong>of</strong> those who are never at any<br />

time able to convert themselves to a divine nature, he never<br />

is nor is said to be the father. Such therefore, as having
