Standard 1: Mission and Goals
Chapter 1
Mission, Goals and Integrity
The institution’s mission clearly defines its purpose within the context of higher education and
indicates who the institution serves and what it intends to accomplish. The institution’s stated
goals, consistent with the aspirations and expectations of higher education, clearly specify how
the institution will fulfill its mission. The mission and goals are developed and recognized by the
institution with the participation of its members and its governing body and are used to develop
and shape its programs and practices and to evaluate its effectiveness.
Standard 6: Integrity
In the conduct of its programs and activities involving the public and the constituencies it serves,
the institution demonstrates adherence to ethical standards and its own stated policies, providing
support for academic and intellectual freedom.
This chapter provides evidence of Keuka College’s compliance with Standard 1 and Standard 6.
Keuka College Mission
The Keuka College Board of Trustees just approved a new Mission, Vision, and Values statement at its
Fall 2012 Board Meeting, thus concluding a process which began in early Fall 2010 when the newly
formed Middle States Steering Committee began its review of the Mission Statement as part of its
charge.
Keuka’s new Mission Statement 2012, developed by the College community and included below,
clearly identifies its purpose and what it intends to accomplish:
To create exemplary citizens and leaders to serve the nation and the world of the 21 st century.
We provide a transformational liberal-arts based education, strengthened by experiential learning,
which challenges students to develop their intellectual curiosity and to realize, with purpose and
integrity, their full personal and professional potential.
The following narrative provides an analysis of Keuka’s compliance with Standard1 and addresses the
process whereby the Mission Statement was changed to reflect the College’s renewed sense of purpose.
When the Middle States Self-Study Steering Committee began its work in early Fall 2010, its members
reviewed carefully the 2008 Mission Statement as a first step in understanding the nature and scope of
the self-study process:

Keuka College is a student-centered, liberal arts-based learning community offering a range of
undergraduate and graduate programs delivered in traditional, non-traditional, and international
formats. The learning environment at Keuka is intellectually challenging, supportive, and fosters
personal as well as academic development. We offer a unique blend of traditional classroom knowledge
and innovative experiential learning that provides students with a solid foundation for a lifetime of
learning, service, and leadership while valuing social responsibility and diversity. Keuka graduates
