Holland and Markides's exam<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>the</strong> cession places it with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wider<br />

European, and particularly Greek, context. They exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> diplomacy which<br />

occurred between Brita<strong>in</strong> and Greece, with a thorough analysis of <strong>the</strong> moves and<br />

strategies devised by <strong>the</strong> Foreign Office and Greece and how Brita<strong>in</strong> ensured its<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>in</strong> choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir candidate for <strong>the</strong> Greek throne. They also connect <strong>the</strong><br />

debates about cession with Balkan issues and Eastern question policies, provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

new perspectives on <strong>the</strong> geopolitical importance of <strong>the</strong> cession. Holland and<br />

Markides's exam<strong>in</strong>ation adds more contextual depth to <strong>the</strong> already exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

historiography on <strong>the</strong> issue, but <strong>the</strong>y do not view <strong>the</strong> cession as “purely <strong>British</strong><br />

policy”. Their exam<strong>in</strong>ation of Storks’s tenure is viewed as a reaction to nationalist<br />

radicals and <strong>the</strong>y do not analyse Storks’s colonial background and policies. Holland<br />

and Markides ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> that Storks approved <strong>the</strong> cession, but discount his attempts to<br />

prevent it from occurr<strong>in</strong>g or to create policies that would ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> authoritarian<br />

colonial rule <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sept<strong>in</strong>sula. Although Holland and Markides's exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

provides an <strong>in</strong> depth and detailed analysis of <strong>the</strong> diplomatic discourse surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> cession, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir consideration of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> <strong>the</strong>y ignore <strong>the</strong> Colonial Office and<br />

its cont<strong>in</strong>ual attempts, even amidst <strong>the</strong> diplomacy, to look for solutions <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Islands</strong> governable for Brita<strong>in</strong>.<br />
