women cruelly and had different systems of <strong>in</strong>heritance, education patterns and<br />

architecture from <strong>the</strong> <strong>British</strong>. 105 Kirkwall felt <strong>the</strong> hot Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Mediterranean climate<br />

produced <strong>in</strong>dolent, passionate and rebellious characters who differed from <strong>the</strong><br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>ed, self-controlled and hard work<strong>in</strong>g Anglo-Saxon men born <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> harsher<br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn European climate. 106 The <strong>Ionian</strong>s were “heaven born songsters... who were<br />

sleep<strong>in</strong>g for half <strong>the</strong> day and walked and sang dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> greater part of <strong>the</strong> night”,<br />

boisterous and <strong>in</strong>considerate, driv<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> visitors and <strong>British</strong> <strong>official</strong>s “crazy” to<br />

such a degree that many saw <strong>the</strong>ir services <strong>in</strong> “this vile and abom<strong>in</strong>able place” as a<br />

k<strong>in</strong>d of “punishment” by <strong>the</strong> <strong>British</strong> government. 107 By his English standards, proper<br />

enterta<strong>in</strong>ment for gentlemen was provided by clean and comfortable clubs. 108<br />

Kirkwall also felt corruption and acts of violence, especially murder, signified <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Ionian</strong>s’ lack of morals and pr<strong>in</strong>ciples. He found himself “<strong>in</strong> a land of<br />

savages”. 109 Some <strong>Ionian</strong> groups were seen as possess<strong>in</strong>g ‘<strong>British</strong>’ virtues. Those<br />

possess<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> civilised manners, good taste and <strong>in</strong>tellectual ability that Lear<br />

appreciated so much were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> upper classes of Corfu. However, <strong>Ionian</strong> society’s<br />
