On 28 May 1864 <strong>the</strong> protocol rel<strong>in</strong>quish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ionian</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> to Greece was<br />

signed by Storks and Zaimi, <strong>the</strong> Commissioner Extraord<strong>in</strong>ary of <strong>the</strong> Greek<br />

government. Brita<strong>in</strong>'s withdrawal from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> <strong>in</strong>cluded all <strong>the</strong>ir guns and<br />

military equipment, bar material that was outdated, and excepted “palace<br />

furnish<strong>in</strong>gs” for <strong>the</strong> reception of <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g. 152 The Times covered <strong>the</strong> annexation of<br />

<strong>Ionian</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> to Greece; <strong>the</strong>ir correspondent described <strong>the</strong> last scenes of farewell<br />

between <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ionian</strong>s and <strong>the</strong>ir protectors <strong>in</strong> an emotional tone. 153 The Daily News also<br />

highlighted <strong>the</strong> takeover of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> by Greece <strong>in</strong> its column. 154<br />

Greek historiography has long treated <strong>the</strong> union with Greece as <strong>the</strong> triumphant<br />

achievement of a long Risospasti campaign while habitually marg<strong>in</strong>alis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> voices<br />

of <strong>Ionian</strong>s opposed to <strong>the</strong> union, utilis<strong>in</strong>g language that treated <strong>the</strong>m as unpatriotic or<br />

as ‘<strong>the</strong> enemies with<strong>in</strong>’. 155 Most historiography has underestimated <strong>the</strong> political<br />

motivations of Brita<strong>in</strong> and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r European Powers when <strong>the</strong>y f<strong>in</strong>ally effectuated<br />

union. The cession of <strong>the</strong> Sept<strong>in</strong>sula was a masterpiece of diplomacy aimed to<br />

promote <strong>British</strong> <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean and Near East. In giv<strong>in</strong>g up a small<br />

protectorate, Brita<strong>in</strong> ultimately obta<strong>in</strong>ed a bigger one.<br />
