by the loss <strong>of</strong> her father. She died at the age <strong>of</strong> twenty-nine, in the<br />

third <strong>of</strong> Ramadan in the year 11, Hijra, about six months after her<br />

father's death.<br />

However, the short life <strong>of</strong> ýatimah, the resplendent one, spanned<br />

the period <strong>of</strong> her father's great mission, because she was born before<br />

his call, and she died shortly after his death. She typifies the<br />

woman whose life is spent in the service <strong>of</strong> her husband and children.<br />

She worked hard, doing her best for her family in those hard and<br />

straitened circumstances. In spite <strong>of</strong> the fact that<br />

busy with pregnancies and giving birth, bringing up children,<br />

iatimah was<br />

she tried to take a positive part in af fairs to help in the growth<br />

<strong>of</strong> Muslim society as far as she could. For example, before her<br />

marriage, she acted as a sort <strong>of</strong> hostess to the poor and also<br />

played a part on the battlefields.<br />

<strong>of</strong> , Uhud was over, she went with the other women to the battlefields<br />

and wept over the dead martyrs and took time to dress her father's<br />

wounds .<br />

On another occasion, at the Battle <strong>of</strong> the Ditch, she played a<br />

crucial role with the other women in preparing food during the long<br />

and difficult siege. " 4<br />
