students have worried it may mean a tussle for studio
space, the design itself aims to foster a potentially
interesting slipstream of disciplines as Fashion and
Textiles, Art, Graphic and Industrial Design, and the
Drama Centre London gather under one roof.
“Our main challenge has been to create a stage for
transformation, a sequence of spaces that can be
orchestrated diff erently over time by staff and students,”
explains architect Paul Williams of award-winning
practice Stanton Williams – a safe, perhaps
conservative, choice for a famously edgy college.
The design focuses around “the Street”, an internal
thoroughfare spanned by bridges, with viewing points
for students to observe colleagues’ projects and ample
space for temporary pavilions. Alongside four levels of
workshops and lecture theatres, bars, dance studios and
a public theatre, a large square out front will prove
handy during the public festivals planned for 2012.
It doesn’t have Soho’s myth, but the site itself is
interesting: built around the industrial Grade II-listed
Granary Building by Lewis Cubitt (architect of King’s
Cross station), CSM is the jewel in Argent’s 64-acre
development of the railway land behind King’s Cross,
including St Pancras Station’s forthcoming ticketing hall
and the vast King’s Cross square, opening in 2013.
As 4,500 new students stream in, everything will be
prohibitively shiny – largely the point of formidable
fashion tutor Louise Wilson’s barbed comments to The
Guardian about the move. But arguably, if a sense of
place is lacking here among this emerging
neighbourhood of glass apartments and
shops, CSM can help shape it.
This is the architect’s hope. Says Williams,
“The building will only get better as the years
go by, as the patinas of use build up. What has
been created at King’s Cross is a blank canvas
for the students and CSM staff .” It’s a daunting,
but exciting prospect, then – and just the kind of
challenge to stimulate a 21st-century art school.

Le bâtiment s’articule autour de « la Rue », artère interne
surmontée de passerelles et de points où les étudiants
pourront observer des projets de leurs condisciples, sans
oublier l’espace nécessaire à des pavillons temporaires. Sur
quatre niveaux s’aligneront ateliers, amphithéâtres, bars,
studios de danse, un théâtre ouvert au public, plus une large
place qui devrait accueillir nombre de festivités en 2012.
On est loin de l’usine à légendes de Soho mais le site a son
intérêt. Construite autour du Granary Building, bâtiment
industriel classé créé par Lewis Cubitt (à qui l’on doit la gare
de King’s Cross), CSM s’inscrit dans le projet du promoteur
Argent qui remet en valeur 26 hectares de terrain jadis
occupés par les voies ferrées derrière King’s Cross. En 2013
s’ouvriront aussi le hall de la gare de St Pancras et l’esplanade
de King’s Cross.
Bientôt, 4 500 étudiants arpenteront ces locaux fl ambant
neufs. Trop immaculés pour Louise Wilson, monstre sacré
du département Mode, comme elle l’a laissé entendre dans
le Guardian. Si ce quartier d’immeubles tout en verre et de
vitrines brillantes manque encore d’âme, gageons que CSM
contribuera à y remédier.
C’est ce qu’espère Williams, son architecte : « L’édifi ce
s’améliorera avec la patine des années. Nous avons créé
à King’s Cross une toile vierge pour les étudiants et
enseignants de CSM. » Perspective intimidante, mais
également terriblement excitante que celle-ci… comme
il sied à une école d’art du XXI e siècle.
