LIBERTY’S
Once considered a dowdy old shop off the fashion radar, Liberty has been transformed recently to
become one of London’s most desirable and stylish department stores for top-name brands, says Peter Watts
it is, surely, the most distinctive shop front in London.
The Liberty of London department store is recognised
around the world – more easily than Harrods, Harvey
Nichols or John Lewis – thanks to its glorious mock
Tudor frontage, which marks the entrance to the store like
the drawbridge of a medieval mansion or a Shakespearean
stage set. Liberty was founded in 1875 and has stood in
Regent Street since 1885 but the iconic frontage only
dates to 1925, when it was constructed from the hulls of
two ships, the HMS Hindustan and HMS Impregnable.
As well as being great to look at, Liberty’s frontage
physically embodies the way the store has been able to
consistently reinvent itself without ignoring history. In
the 1990s, it had developed a reputation as being rather
stuff y and old-fashioned. It smelled of stale perfume and
was impossible to navigate without getting lost. One
ambitious refurbishment later, and all that has changed.
Liberty has become a brand. What was once oldfashioned
is now classic, while eye-catching
collaborations with fashion designers and celebrities –
this autumn’s fabrics have been designed by rock stars
such as Edwyn (A Girl Like You) Collins, Blur’s Graham
Coxon and John Squire of the Stone Roses – demonstrate
that Liberty is still at the sharp end of design, as it was
when it was founded.
Ed Burstell, the managing director, summarises the
changes: “Over the last decade there has been a move
forward with high-profi le collaborations with brands
such as Hermès, Nike and Manolo Blahnik, which lend a
cutting-edge fashion sensibility, while the introduction
of products such as stationery, shirts and scarves has
given us a broader commercial appeal.”
Collins (A Girl Like You), Graham Coxon de Blur et John Squire,
Handicapé pendant plusieurs décennies par une
réputation vieillotte, Liberty a vite tiré profi t des
changements : moins malmené que ses rivaux
