ADVERTORIAL GOING FOR GOLD Talented young people from across the globe are heading to WorldSkills London 2011 this October to prove themselves in the greatest skills competition on earth For the first time in 22 years, the UK will play host to the greatest skills competition, careers and jobs event on earth, WorldSkills London 2011. It will see 1,000 competitors from more than 55 member countries and regions vie for gold, silver and bronze medals in 46 diverse skill competitions. Taking place at ExCeL London from 5 to 8 October, WorldSkills London 2011 is set to attract 150,000 visitors. The aim is to amaze visitors and inspire them to consider skilled careers. And it’s more than just a competition – every visitor can have a go at any of the 46 skills, meet hundreds of top employers, gain career advice and watch 100 colleges and schools showcase what they do best. So, have a go at virtual welding with Lincoln Electric; try your hand at chocolate facial beauty treatments; or take up Honda and Snap-On Industrial’s pit-stop challenge. The UK is fi elding its biggest team yet, with 43 Team UK competitors taking part in 37 skills, including automobile technology, landscape gardening and cooking. Team France will also have a huge presence at the event, with 44 competitors competing in 39 different skill categories, including printing and restaurant service. Expect plenty of cross-Channel rivalry, as France and the UK took three gold medals each at WorldSkills Calgary 2009. In fact, the two teams tied for gold in the Electrical Installations Competition, with France also winning gold in Floristry, and Plastering and Drywall Systems, while the UK won Cooking, and Painting and Decorating. Even though there are only so many colours in the world, we want to create a unique look every time.” Each Liberty Rocks design was approached in a diff erent way. “I knew John Squire was an artist and I wanted him to design something, and it blossomed from there,” says Mawston. “My team got loads of album covers, looked at the colours that were used and made designs based on them. And we also looked for rock stars who were interested in art and design. When we work with people like Squire or Graham Coxon, we give them a brief and let them go off and do it themselves. We’ve chosen them because we love their work so I want them to have the freedom to do what they want.” Diff erent musicians demonstrated diff erent working practices. Coxon and Squire both designed fabrics based on their own drawings. Florence Welch – lead singer with Florence and the Machine – spent a morning at Liberty’s fabric archive, looking through 43,000 designs for one to recreate. Edwyn Collins’s design is perhaps the most fascinating. It consists of the drawings of British birds the singer made while recovering from a stroke in 2005 that left him unable to talk or walk. Aft er Collins’s bird drawings went on display in London, Mawston contacted him to ask if they could be used on a Liberty fabric. “We sent them about 40 drawings and they came back with the design and we had to choose the diff erent colours. It looks magnifi cent, but it was also shocking to see it,” says Collins. “They’d even kept some of my handwriting and the dates when I’d done the drawing. It’s amazing to see it on a Liberty print.” The designs are created for a pattern on cotton called Tana Lawn, but are also applied to silk, wool and jersey. As well as being sold in the shop, many are used by some of the leading fashion houses in the world, who admire the Liberty ethic and its history. “We’re the best designers in the world,” says Mawston. “We hand-draw everything. All our concepts are original, we don’t follow trends and we all wear print so know how it works on the body. But we’re not fashion designers, we are textile designers and that’s why we’re successful. Tout est parti de là, explique Emma Mawston. Mon équipe a pris des tonnes de couvertures d’album, a observé les couleurs et s’en est servie pour les créations. Nous nous sommes mis en quête de rock stars intéressées par l’art et le design. Avec des gens comme Squire ou Graham Coxon, on donne quelques consignes et on les laisse travailler. Si on les a choisis, c’est parce qu’on aime ce qu’ils font. Je voulais qu’ils donnent libre cours à leur imagination. » Les musiciens ont utilisé des méthodes de travail diff érentes. Si Coxon et Squire ont réalisé des tissus basés sur leurs dessins, Florence Welch, chanteuse de Florence And The Machine, a choisi, après une matinée dans les archives, de réinterpréter l’un des 43 000 imprimés en stock. L’œuvre d’Edwyn Collins est peut-être la plus fascinante. Le chanteur reprend en eff et ses croquis d’oiseaux réalisés en 2005 pendant sa convalescence à la suite d’un accident vasculaire cérébral qui l’avait laissé muet et incapable de marcher. À l’ouverture d’une exposition consacrée aux dessins de Collins, Emma Mawston lui a demandé l’autorisation de les utiliser sur un tissu Liberty. « Nous leur avons envoyé 40 dessins, puis ils nous ont envoyé l’imprimé en nous demandant de choisir les coloris. C’est sublime, certes, mais c’est aussi un choc de voir ça, dit Collins. Ils avaient même conservé mon écriture et les dates des dessins. C’est très surprenant de retrouver ça sur un imprimé Liberty. » Conçus pour un tissu en coton appelé Tana Lawn, ces motifs sont déclinés sur soie, laine ou jersey. Vendus au magasin, beaucoup sont aussi utilisés par les plus grandes maisons de mode, admiratives de la philosophie et de l’histoire de Liberty. « Nous sommes les meilleurs designers, dit Emma Mawston. Tout est dessiné à la main, nos concepts sont tous originaux, on ne suit pas les tendances et comme on porte tous des imprimés, on sait comment un motif vit sur le corps. Cela dit, nous ne sommes pas créateurs de mode mais créateurs de tissus et c’est pour ça que ça marche.
