GOING FOR GOLD<br />

Talented young people from across the globe are heading to WorldSkills London <strong>2011</strong><br />

this October to prove themselves in the greatest skills competition on earth<br />

For the first time in 22 years,<br />

the UK will play host to the<br />

greatest skills competition,<br />

careers and jobs event on earth,<br />

WorldSkills London <strong>2011</strong>. It will see<br />

1,000 competitors from more than<br />

55 member countries and regions vie<br />

for gold, silver and bronze medals in<br />

46 diverse skill competitions.<br />

Taking place at ExCeL London from<br />

5 to 8 October, WorldSkills London <strong>2011</strong><br />

is set to attract 150,000 visitors. The<br />

aim is to amaze visitors and inspire<br />

them to consider skilled careers. And<br />

it’s more than just a competition – every<br />

visitor can have a go at any of the 46<br />

skills, meet hundreds of top employers,<br />

gain career advice and watch 100<br />

colleges and schools showcase what<br />

they do best.<br />

So, have a go at virtual welding<br />

with Lincoln Electric; try your hand at<br />

chocolate facial beauty treatments;<br />

or take up Honda and Snap-On<br />

Industrial’s pit-stop challenge.<br />

The UK is fi elding its biggest team<br />

yet, with 43 Team UK competitors<br />

taking part in 37 skills, including<br />

automobile technology, landscape<br />

gardening and cooking.<br />

Team France will also have a<br />

huge presence at the event, with 44<br />

competitors competing in 39 different<br />

skill categories, including printing and<br />

restaurant service.<br />

Expect plenty of cross-Channel<br />

rivalry, as France and the UK took<br />

three gold medals each at WorldSkills<br />

Calgary 2009. In fact, the two<br />

teams tied for gold in the Electrical<br />

Installations Competition, with<br />

France also winning gold in Floristry,<br />

and Plastering and Drywall Systems,<br />

while the UK won Cooking, and<br />

Painting and Decorating.<br />

Aidan Jones, chief executive of<br />

WorldSkills London <strong>2011</strong>, is encouraging<br />

everyone from across the UK and the<br />

EU to get behind their team.<br />

“WorldSkills London is a fantastic<br />

opportunity to see highly skilled young<br />

people competing to be the best in<br />

their chosen fi eld,” says Jones. “There<br />

is no better way to discover a new<br />

passion or hidden talent than to visit<br />

the event and have a go yourself.”<br />
