Noun +하고, +(이)랑 and +과/와 ‘and’<br />

UNIT 8 비빔밥 하나 주세요<br />

+하고, +(이)랑 and +과/와 are particles add<strong>ed</strong> to the end of a noun to<br />

connect it to another noun:<br />

1) +하고 for conversational speech: 빵하고 우유<br />

우유하고 빵<br />

2) +(이)랑 for conversational speech, which often us<strong>ed</strong> by children or young<br />

females<br />

o If the word ends in a vowel +랑: 우유랑 빵<br />

o If the word ends in a consonant, +이랑: 빵이랑 우유<br />

3) +과/와 for writing or formal speech<br />

o If the word ends in a vowel, +와: 우유와 빵<br />

o If the word ends in a consonant, +과: 빵과 우유<br />

Note that there is no space between the first noun and the particle, but there is<br />

a space between the particle and the second noun (not 콜라 하고 홍차, but<br />

콜라하고 홍차). We use +하고 most often in conversation.<br />

Examples:<br />

(1) 손님: 콜라하고 커피 주세요. Please give me a coke and a coffee.<br />

점원: 네, 여기 있습니다 Certainly, here you are.<br />

(2) A: 한국어 수업 언제 있어요? . When do you have Korean classes?<br />

B: 월요일하고 수요일이요 On Mondays and W<strong>ed</strong>nesdays.<br />

(3) 빵이랑 우유 샀어요. I bought bread and milk.<br />

(4) 독립영화 ‘빵과 우유’<br />
