In Korea, the arrangement of family relationships is extremely important, and<br />

there is an elaborate system of kinship terms to describe the relationship you<br />

have to your relatives.<br />

So for example, there are different words for older brothers and sisters<br />

depending on your sex. These words for older sister and brother, 언니/누나<br />

and 오빠/형, are also commonly us<strong>ed</strong> between people who are not relat<strong>ed</strong>.<br />

When you feel close to someone who is older than you, you can call him or<br />

her by the appropriate term for your sex. Koreans don’t refer to or speak to<br />

people who are older than them using their given names.<br />

Koreans also distinguish between the father’s family and the mother’s. The<br />

terms given above for grandparents, uncles and aunts only refer to the father’s<br />

family. If you were speaking about your mother’s side, you would add the
