Education System in Korea<br />

UNIT 10 전공이 뭐예요?<br />

Education in Korea is consider<strong>ed</strong> very important and competition is great.<br />

School begins with kindergarten through primary school (excluding prep)<br />

and on to middle and senior high schools, which are separate unlike in<br />

Australia. Although only six years of primary school and three years of<br />

middle school are compulsory, most Koreans will also attend the three years<br />

of senior high school as well.<br />

Tertiary <strong>ed</strong>ucation consists of four years of University or two years of<br />

vocational collage. Unlike Australia, Korean Universities do not offer an<br />

Honours year although there are postgraduate schools where students can<br />

study Masters or a Ph.D.<br />

The school year is divid<strong>ed</strong> into two semesters for early schooling as well as<br />

tertiary <strong>ed</strong>ucation. The first semester begins in March and lasts until mid-July<br />

and the second from September 1st till late-December.<br />
