When the stem ends in ㅅ, the ㅅ is remov<strong>ed</strong> when the next<br />

syllable starts with a vowel. For example, 짓 (build) becomes<br />

지어요( build) and 지으면 (if you build).<br />

When the stem ends in ㄷ, the ㄷ is remov<strong>ed</strong> when the next<br />

syllable starts with a vowel . For example, 듣 becomes 들어요<br />

(listen).<br />

When the stem ends in ㄹ, the ㄹ is remov<strong>ed</strong> when the next<br />

syllable starts with ㄴ, ㄹ, ㅂ, 오, or 시 . For example, 길(long)<br />

becomes 깁니다 (is long) and 기니까 (because it’s long).<br />

When the stem ends in ㅂ, the ㅂ changes into 오 before +아<br />

and 우 before +어. For example, 돕 becomes 도와요(help)<br />

and 아름답 becomes 아름다워요(beautiful).<br />

When the stem ends in ㅡ, the ㅡ is delet<strong>ed</strong> when the next<br />

syllable starts with a vowel. For example, 크 (big)<br />

becomes 커요(is big) and 아프(sick) becomes 아파요(is sick).<br />

When forming the +아/어 form of stems that end in 르, 르 is<br />

delet<strong>ed</strong> and +ㄹ라/ㄹ러 are add<strong>ed</strong> to the stem. For example<br />

자르 becomes 잘라요(cut) and 부르 becomes 불러요(sing).<br />

For stems ending in 하, 하여 can be found instead of 해 in<br />

some formal writing.
