UNIT 9 얼마예요?<br />

Note 1: Koreans typically express the first four (or three) digits of a phone<br />

number as one number, follow<strong>ed</strong> by 국에, and then the last four digits as<br />

another number, before finally adding 번. However, Koreans are increasingly<br />

expressing phone numbers as a series of digits, as in English.<br />

More examples:<br />

(1) A: 이거 얼마예요? How much is this?<br />

B: 천오백 원이에요. It’s 1,500 won.<br />

(2) A: 신입사원 월급이* 얼마나 돼요? How much is the starting<br />

salary?<br />

B: 삼백만 원이에요. 3,000,000 won (per month).<br />

(In Korea, salaries are calculat<strong>ed</strong> by the month. 월급 means a month’s<br />

pay (월 month + 급 provision). An employee will usually receive a<br />

bonus payment which can be up to 6 months base salary per year, as<br />

well as allowances for meals and travelling expenses. Starting annual<br />

salaries for university graduates in major companies averag<strong>ed</strong><br />

29,850,000 won (A$ 40,695) in 2007.)<br />

(3) A: 추석이* 언제예요? When is Chuseok?<br />

B: 음력 팔월 십오일이에요. It’s August 15<br />

in the lunar calendar.<br />

(추석 is one of the most important public holidays in the Korean<br />

calendar. Traditionally, it mark<strong>ed</strong> the end of the harvest in autumn. On<br />

the day before 추석 literally millions of Koreans jam the highways as<br />

they travel to their hometowns for the traditional celebrations.)<br />
