Chapter 16
Detoxification
Once a patient has all dental amalgam fillings and other toxic
metals removed from the oral cavity it should become much
easier to remove the mercury and other toxins that have been
stored in the body‟s tissues. A major purpose of amalgam
removal is to allow the body to move into this vigorous
detoxification (“detox”) phase. It is as though the body gives up
on trying to detoxify itself as long as it is being subjected every
day to the mercury released from the amalgam fillings.
But there can be other barriers to detoxification that can
prevent the body from moving into the detox phase. These
barriers include an overly acidic body pH, mineral and vitamin
deficiencies, the presence of infections, poor circulation, and
problems with the organs of elimination – the kidneys, the liver
and the bowel. For sicker patients, an evaluation by a health
care practitioner other than the dentist before amalgam
replacement can help identify the existence of any problem
areas. These should be addressed, if possible, prior to amalgam
replacement. By resolving constipation, for example, and
improving the function of the kidneys, liver and gut, the process
of removing amalgam fillings by a qualified dentist becomes
even safer and smoother.
The mercury toxic patient is usually low in such vital nutrients
as magnesium, zinc, vitamin C and the B vitamins. This is
