Definitions
Abscess - a localized collection of pus in any part of the body,
formed by tissue disintegration by an inflamed area. A tooth
abscess is rotting bone tissue next to the root of a tooth, often
caused by infection that has killed a tooth or by the infection and
toxins released from a root canal treated tooth. Most often, a
tooth abscess is suspected because of pain and is confirmed by
an x-ray taken of the tooth (or teeth). However, an abscess
might not be visible from the view of the tooth taken by a single
x-ray; it might, in fact, be hidden between roots or behind a
root. CEDS helps overcome this limitation by testing the tooth
energetically. The TOPAS (now called HALITOX) test will also
likely show serious bacterial and fungal infection at such a tooth.
If an abscessed tooth is just root canal treated, what is going to
take care of the abscess? The abscessed tooth should be
extracted, with the diseased, abscessed area thoroughly cleaned
out. CEDS can help determine that the surgical clean-out has
been complete and successful.
Amalgam - any of the various mixtures of mercury with other
metals. A dental amalgam is, by definition, a mixture of
mercury with other metals which is soft enough to place and
shape, but will then) harden into a durable filling. In dental
amalgams, mercury is always about 50% of the new amalgam
filling materials. The other metals are silver, copper, tin and a
trace amount (less than 1%) of zinc. Amalgam manufacturer
warning labels have a poison warning, a skull and crossbones
symbol) about this product, indicating) that the product contains
mercury, which causes neurological and kidney problems, and
vision impairment. Sadly, most dental patients never see the
product warning labels, and dentists often fail to tell them about
the warning – it would scare them. The mercury content in old
amalgam fillings has been measured at as low as 28% mercury,
down from the original 50% mercury. (Eichman, R) That
difference is explained by the vaporization of mercury from the
