Lab Information for Dentists:
Cook Dental Lab processes the denture to the finished hard
plastic with a hot water curing method using 167 degrees for 20
hours. Other laboratories use other methods, curing with a light
and injection molding to harden the denture plastics. I like the
twenty-hour hot water cure to remove the monomer (monomer
is the liquid used in making the denture base) making the
denture as compatible as possible with this technique.
Everyone has a different degree of sensitivity. We in the
dental profession must make every effort to help these sensitive
patients.
A Temporary
Covering a tooth, once it has been prepared to make an inlay,
crown, or bridge is called a temporary restoration. A function of
temporary filling materials is to protect the tooth while the
permanent restoration is being made. Care must be taken to
use compatible temporary materials, and a good example is the
use of aluminum in temporary crowns. Aluminum has a high
electrical charge that causes pain. Beware of inexpensive metal
and plastic temporaries, their energy or chemical fumes, can
make patients ill.
For a list of the most compatible temporary materials refer to
chapter 16, dental material section.
Information for the dentist: Durelon cement by 3M ESPE is one
of the best cements for bonding the temporaries to the tooth.
