arium, 4) root canals, and 5) a base metal bridge containing
nickel. The upper right cuspid (eye tooth) and lateral tooth were
root canals that had been placed at age 17. Checking her with
CEDS, the root canals #6 and #7 led me to her main concern,
head pain.
She said the pain had started soon after the root canals had
been placed. Her upper #3 and #4 to #6 teeth (right side) held
a nickel bridge. The Oral Potential Meter II recorded
unacceptably high electrical activity in her bridge of 180 millivolts,
6 micro-amps, and .56 micro-watts time seconds (energy)
indicating possible decay and adding to her head pain. Refer to
Problems.
After receiving her permission, I used an easy technique to
find the source of her pain. I placed a few drops of local
anesthetic over the two root canals, and her pain stopped within
a minute after the injection. Mary Ann‟s eyes filled with tears of
joy at finding the cause. Injection of the anesthetic reduced the
pain in her head and face like acupuncture, allowing her to go
without pain medication until her appointment the following
week.
Mary Ann returned for removal of #7 and #6, and I replaced
the extracted root canals with a partial, and the nickel bridge #3
to #5 with a temporary bridge. Follow-up work included
removal of all metals and metal oxide composites and placing
non-metal fillings.
The patient‟s facial and head pain started again in 2008 when
she allowed an endodontist to perform two more root canals,
thinking it would save her teeth. I immediately canceled her
head pain with local anesthetic to the two root canals #3 and
#30. Mary Ann said, “This is the first relief of pain I have had all
week”. With the removal of her porcelain and nickel metal
bridge #30 to #28, followed by removal of #30 and #3 root
canal treated teeth, I stopped her pain.
