survival, and become the potential foci of problems of <strong>to</strong>morrow.<br />

In answer <strong>to</strong> assertions <strong>by</strong> colleagues <strong>to</strong> the effect that they<br />

only grind the enamel with their turbines, I would like <strong>to</strong> reply<br />

that they are in no position <strong>to</strong> determine macroscopically<br />

whether they are still working in the enamel or are already in the<br />

dentine. Even if the drill only contacts the dentine at one single<br />

point, the suction effect on the dentinal tubules then has already<br />

been produced, causing irreversible damage <strong>to</strong> the pulp. A<br />

partial statistic for ground or milled teeth speaks for itself: the<br />

application of conventional methods of pulp testing on teeth<br />

treated with turbines merely show changed sensitivity values,<br />

not whether the <strong>to</strong>oth is dying.<br />

Measurement with CEDS is the only way <strong>to</strong> determine the<br />

damage in an exact manner. Responses <strong>to</strong> cold or heat stimuli,<br />

or <strong>to</strong> electric currents, (the usual clinical "vitality tests"), provide<br />

no evidence for the functionality of the pulp's vitality. I have<br />

been able <strong>to</strong> provide supporting evidence with test results<br />

involving his<strong>to</strong>logical examinations on extracted teeth, which had<br />

previously treated with turbines (high-speed drilling). High<br />

speed drilling is one of the main reasons teeth become sensitive<br />

<strong>to</strong> hot and cold, and can cause the teeth <strong>to</strong> die. A <strong>to</strong>oth that<br />

becomes sensitive after high-speed drilling can remain painful<br />

for days, or even months. Sensitive teeth should be watched<br />

carefully; if symp<strong>to</strong>ms of discomfort increase, the <strong>to</strong>oth could be<br />

dying. CEDS should be used <strong>to</strong> cross check the sensitive teeth<br />

with their organ system.<br />
