of the teeth. Plaque also has an electrical effect of pulling<br />

calcium ions from the enamel – resulting in decay. Plaque will<br />

eventually lead <strong>to</strong> decay.<br />

Subjective Symp<strong>to</strong>ms of Oral Electricity<br />

Every patient and health professional needs <strong>to</strong> be aware of<br />

symp<strong>to</strong>ms that may come from electrical effect caused <strong>by</strong> metal<br />

dental materials such as: metallic or salty taste, increase in<br />

salivary secretion, burning or tingling sensation at margins of the<br />

<strong>to</strong>ngue, nerve shocks and pulp sensitivity (made <strong>by</strong> a spoon or<br />

table fork <strong>to</strong>uching a filling). Pathologic changes in the blood,<br />

kidney or other organs problems (caused <strong>by</strong> absorption of <strong>to</strong>xic<br />

metals) may be symp<strong>to</strong>ms of galvanic current. Generalized<br />

discomfort in the mouth, irritability, indigestion, loss of weight<br />

and in some cases, reflex radiating neuralgic pains through<br />

branches of the fifth trigeminal nerve (in the head) may also be<br />

symp<strong>to</strong>ms.<br />

In the September 1936 volume of the Journal of the American<br />

Dental Association (JADA), Lain and Caugron wrote about that<br />

“galvanic pain”, which is also known as an electro-galvanic<br />

phenomenon of the oral cavity, is caused <strong>by</strong> dissimilar metallic<br />

res<strong>to</strong>rations.)<br />

<strong>Dentist</strong>s examining the oral cavity should look for the<br />

following signs of galvanic current: disintegration and<br />
