The majority <strong>of</strong> businesses surveyed are independent. A total <strong>of</strong> 88 percent are headquarters locations,<br />

with only 12 percent identifying themselves as subsidiaries. These businesses are also generally small.<br />

Over half (54 percent) have fewer than 10 employees, and 55 percent have annual gross sales <strong>of</strong> $1<br />

million or less. Nor have the responding businesses seen significant growth during the recent boom—<br />

the distribution <strong>of</strong> employment was virtually the same three years ago as it is today. Further, 40 percent<br />

<strong>of</strong> respondents expect their pr<strong>of</strong>itability to decline in the future, compared with 36 percent who expect it<br />

to increase (25 percent did not answer the question).<br />
