Concentrations of allergens used for skin testing in horses in Australia have been
based on those used for small animals, which were loosely derived from human
studies and modified according to reactions in normal dogs in early work (10). In
Australia, most allergens (grass, tree and weed pollens, moulds and insects) from
Greer are tested at a concentration of 1000pnu (Protein Nitrogen Units), with some
minor exceptions (15, 16). Dust mite and various other allergens are provided in
weight per volume measurements (w/v), and the standard testing concentration for
these is 1:10 000 which is roughly equivalent to 1000pnu.
