In many cases of coronary band disease a definitive diagnosis can be made on
histological examination of biopsy material. The optimum method for procuring
tissue is by the shave biopsy technique, whereby a tangential incision is made over
the curve of the bulbs of the heel, under regional nerve block and sedation, if
necessary. Haemostasis is achieved by application of a dressing and pressure
bandage. Healing is usually uneventful, without any adverse effect on hoof wall
growth.
