alien ga<strong>in</strong>ed access to <strong>the</strong> status <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiate. The sense <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiation, <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g a privileged <strong>in</strong>sider,<br />
constituted a key element <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pleasures <strong>of</strong> belief, a pleasure that is both <strong>in</strong>tegrative and<br />
dis<strong>in</strong>tegrative. It constitutes a source <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> group identity created around those “<strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> know.” Initiation also <strong>of</strong>fered a centripetal sense <strong>of</strong> cohesion <strong>in</strong> its <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a still center<br />
<strong>of</strong> belief. The message from <strong>the</strong> cosmos—from <strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>rs, from <strong>the</strong> ascended masters,<br />
from <strong>the</strong> dead—<strong>of</strong>fered a series <strong>of</strong> credos that serve as anchors to <strong>the</strong> aspirant: human<br />
personality survives beyond death; <strong>the</strong> world beyond is one <strong>of</strong> illimitable movement toward<br />
perfection; <strong>the</strong> O<strong>the</strong>rs watch over us and shepherd us toward our own <strong>in</strong>nate potential.<br />
Variations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se credos had long been on <strong>of</strong>fer with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> traditional Christianity.<br />
The moments here<strong>in</strong> discussed <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong> consolations <strong>of</strong> Christianity and <strong>the</strong> excitement <strong>of</strong><br />
radical politics, both read through a peculiar set <strong>of</strong> modifications: <strong>the</strong> “scientifically” established<br />
truth <strong>of</strong> life after death (<strong>the</strong> bourgeois subject projected <strong>in</strong>to <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ity), <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> a host <strong>of</strong><br />
O<strong>the</strong>rs who speak from <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side and <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g efforts to render matters <strong>of</strong> spirit <strong>in</strong><br />
terms more conversant with a positivist ethos. Elements <strong>of</strong> traditional Christianity were only<br />
fitfully present <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cases exam<strong>in</strong>ed here. The traditional hierarchies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church are all but<br />
absent <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> Spiritualism, focused <strong>in</strong>to a s<strong>in</strong>gle primary tier <strong>of</strong> leadership <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cases <strong>of</strong><br />

Information provided by ascended masters promised <strong>the</strong> goods <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian afterlife<br />
