Summary and Conclusions<br />

Now that, with <strong>the</strong> preced<strong>in</strong>g discussion <strong>of</strong> alien abduction, we have reached more-or-less<br />

<strong>the</strong> present day, I will <strong>of</strong>fer some conclud<strong>in</strong>g remarks. I will first briefly revisit <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes that<br />

have consistently <strong>in</strong>formed what, by way <strong>of</strong> shorthand, I have been call<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> displaced utopian<br />

imag<strong>in</strong>ary. The latter term, ra<strong>the</strong>r than proscrib<strong>in</strong>g some stable referent, gestures <strong>in</strong>stead at a<br />

thread <strong>of</strong> utopian thought and practice that runs through modern <strong>American</strong> culture—a thread<br />

woven <strong>of</strong> both terrestrial and o<strong>the</strong>rworldly concerns and sensibilities but nei<strong>the</strong>r wholly religious<br />

nor wholly secular. After discuss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes that consistently <strong>in</strong>form this l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> thought and<br />

practice, I will address <strong>the</strong> elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> displaced utopian imag<strong>in</strong>ary that lend it its dynamism.<br />

Along with a relatively stable set <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes, <strong>the</strong> displaced utopian imag<strong>in</strong>ary also consists <strong>of</strong><br />

dynamic and shift<strong>in</strong>g narrative structures. The discussion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se dynamic elements will lead to<br />

a f<strong>in</strong>al discussion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> implications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> narrative shifts brought about by <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> UFO and alien abduction <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> second half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> twentieth century.<br />

The passage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> displaced utopian imag<strong>in</strong>ary over <strong>the</strong> latter half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth and<br />

<strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> twentieth centuries reveals both a set <strong>of</strong> consistent tropes and a series <strong>of</strong><br />

dynamics that enact broader structural shifts over time. The displaced utopian imag<strong>in</strong>ary is both<br />

consistent and dynamic. To reiterate, <strong>the</strong> displaced utopian imag<strong>in</strong>ary concerns itself primarily<br />

with imag<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> dramatic transformation <strong>of</strong> social reality—a transformation br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g about a<br />

utopia. The potential utopia is enfigured by a series <strong>of</strong> O<strong>the</strong>rs who have already achieved <strong>the</strong><br />
