modernity, Weber stressed over and over aga<strong>in</strong>, has been deserted by <strong>the</strong> gods.” 11<br />

The rise <strong>of</strong><br />

governmental bureaucracy, <strong>the</strong> systematization <strong>of</strong> bank<strong>in</strong>g, law, medic<strong>in</strong>e, and science and <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>dustrialization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> production process are all clear trajectories <strong>in</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century America<br />

and all spoke to an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g dom<strong>in</strong>ance <strong>of</strong> rational systems. 12<br />

But runn<strong>in</strong>g alongside and, <strong>in</strong><br />

some ways, counter to this tendency was an effort to <strong>in</strong>sert <strong>the</strong> sacred <strong>in</strong>to this <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

dom<strong>in</strong>ant rationalist worldview.<br />

The notion <strong>of</strong> “reenchantment” is common co<strong>in</strong> amongst postmodernists. It constitutes a<br />

recurr<strong>in</strong>g element <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> checklist used to del<strong>in</strong>eate <strong>the</strong> postmodern condition. Wear<strong>in</strong>ess with<br />

and <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g skepticism with rational systems <strong>of</strong> control lend <strong>the</strong>mselves to <strong>the</strong> reemergence <strong>of</strong><br />

magical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> relaxation <strong>of</strong> evidentiary standards, giv<strong>in</strong>g renewed play to faith,<br />

dream, <strong>in</strong>tuition, and o<strong>the</strong>r non-rational faculties. So <strong>the</strong> story goes. However, it is debatable<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r such a worldview ever fully quit <strong>the</strong> scene. The l<strong>in</strong>ked narratives that comprise this<br />

dissertation tell part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong> how <strong>the</strong> “irrational” survived <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> rationalization.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> US culture <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth and twentieth centuries, <strong>the</strong><br />

countervail<strong>in</strong>g force to rationalization and <strong>the</strong> ris<strong>in</strong>g hegemony <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> positivist worldview is not<br />

so much reenchantment as it is a k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> neo-enchantment—a notion that requires some<br />

explanation. The implied argument <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term neo-enchantment is that ra<strong>the</strong>r than a story <strong>in</strong><br />

which <strong>the</strong> sacred and/or irrational disappears or goes <strong>in</strong>to hid<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong>n comes back<br />

(reenchantment), it would be more appropriate to tell a story <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> sacred and/or irrational<br />

undergoes a change <strong>in</strong> state or k<strong>in</strong>d, <strong>in</strong> order to adapt to current conditions—a new enchantment,<br />

re-tooled for <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day. I should note here that both notions—<strong>the</strong> reemergence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
