as spiritual aspirations embodied. This embodiment, <strong>in</strong> turn, enacted <strong>the</strong> ongo<strong>in</strong>g materialization<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spiritual.<br />

With <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> Swedenborg, most extraterrestrial contacts were with denizens <strong>of</strong><br />

Venus and Mars. Contact with figures from those locales cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> twentieth century,<br />

and with some notable changes, culm<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> religions based upon <strong>the</strong><br />

messages <strong>of</strong> our space-far<strong>in</strong>g brethren—<strong>the</strong> “space bro<strong>the</strong>rs.” It is <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>of</strong> this chapter to<br />

explore <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>termediary phase between <strong>the</strong> occult revivals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century and <strong>the</strong><br />

post- World War II emergence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fly<strong>in</strong>g saucer. We will exam<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>in</strong> turn, two pr<strong>in</strong>cipals that<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> traditions discussed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> previous chapter while lay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> groundwork for <strong>the</strong><br />

space bro<strong>the</strong>r religions that followed. The two pr<strong>in</strong>cipals <strong>in</strong> question are William Dudley Pelley<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Ballards, both <strong>of</strong> whom built follow<strong>in</strong>gs from ostensible ongo<strong>in</strong>g contact with O<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

The chapter will treat each <strong>in</strong> turn, focus<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> contact between <strong>the</strong>se pr<strong>in</strong>cipals<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir extraterrestrial <strong>in</strong>terlocutors, <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terlocutors <strong>the</strong>mselves, and <strong>the</strong> content<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir messages. At issue <strong>in</strong> this treatment is: <strong>the</strong> early twentieth century ma<strong>in</strong>tenance and<br />

transformation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tropes previously established as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nexus <strong>of</strong> alien-human<br />

communication; <strong>the</strong> connections between <strong>the</strong> sociopolitical aspirations <strong>in</strong>herent <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

communication between human and O<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> more traditionally articulated politics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

day; and <strong>the</strong> transmogrification from spirit to alien, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g both <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly common<br />

claim that <strong>the</strong>se spectral <strong>in</strong>terlocutors hail from o<strong>the</strong>r planets and <strong>the</strong> movement toward<br />

embodied contact with those <strong>in</strong>terlocutors.<br />

The extraterrestrial as framed by <strong>the</strong> contactee narrative functioned as a variant on <strong>the</strong><br />

entities that populated Theosophy and Spiritualism. The Great White Bro<strong>the</strong>rhood was central to<br />

<strong>the</strong> spiritual system elaborated by Blavatsky. The bro<strong>the</strong>rhood, a conclave <strong>of</strong> “ascended<br />
