communiqués emerge not from <strong>the</strong> land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dead but from a twilit realm <strong>of</strong> impossible<br />

experience. It is not <strong>the</strong> banal proclamations <strong>of</strong> departed kith and k<strong>in</strong> that <strong>the</strong> analysand<br />

communicates, but ra<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>ir own embodied, yet alienated, experience. Uncannily echo<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

demands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> alien abductors <strong>the</strong> patient undergo<strong>in</strong>g hypnosis is repeatedly told by <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>rapist that <strong>the</strong>y have noth<strong>in</strong>g to fear, <strong>the</strong>y are safe and more importantly, <strong>the</strong>y are not to<br />

remember anyth<strong>in</strong>g upon awaken<strong>in</strong>g. In a very real way, <strong>the</strong> analyst is <strong>the</strong> daytime face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

extraterrestrial <strong>in</strong>truder—<strong>the</strong> abduction is made consummate by <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rapist. After beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> listen<strong>in</strong>g to taped sessions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir hypnosis a tell<strong>in</strong>g exchange occurred between<br />

<strong>the</strong> Hills. “’I certa<strong>in</strong>ly,’ Betty laughed, ‘hope that Dr. Simon isn’t really a spaceman!’”<br />

Barney’s rejo<strong>in</strong>der recalled his response to Betty’s query, posed immediately after <strong>the</strong> craft took<br />

<strong>of</strong>f at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir encounter, as to whe<strong>the</strong>r he now believed <strong>in</strong> fly<strong>in</strong>g saucers. “Don’t be<br />

ridiculous!” 278<br />

In <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> broader abduction discourse, <strong>the</strong> hypno<strong>the</strong>rapist occupies a priestly,<br />

or <strong>in</strong> concert with <strong>the</strong> abductee, shaman-like, position. It is <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rapist who opens <strong>the</strong> avenues<br />

that make it possible for <strong>the</strong> abductee to dive deep and recover his memories <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> experience.<br />

It is <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rapist who helps <strong>the</strong> abductee process and suture his trauma. In early cases, such as<br />

<strong>the</strong> Hills, <strong>the</strong> primary goal <strong>of</strong> hypnosis was such a suture and <strong>the</strong> hypno<strong>the</strong>rapist seemed less<br />

<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g some raison d’etre for <strong>the</strong> phenomenon. This is explicable <strong>in</strong> part by <strong>the</strong><br />

very fact that <strong>the</strong>re was no established set <strong>of</strong> narrative tropes to draw upon at this po<strong>in</strong>t. The<br />

operative assumption was that any events that had occurred were ei<strong>the</strong>r strictly subjective or that<br />

some quotidian explanation would suffice <strong>in</strong> contextualiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> analysand’s experience. It is<br />

also important to note that <strong>the</strong> relationship between <strong>the</strong>rapist and “client community” changes<br />
