Reports back from <strong>the</strong> spirit realm tended to support <strong>the</strong> sense that while <strong>the</strong> afterlife<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> contours <strong>of</strong> terrestrial life, it did so <strong>in</strong> a form stripped <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

physical bodies. The needs for sustenance and elim<strong>in</strong>ation, for sex and cloth<strong>in</strong>g were all<br />

dim<strong>in</strong>ished and ultimately purged. The spiritual body, while wholly recognizable as an<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual human was altoge<strong>the</strong>r less animalistic. Just as Christ left beh<strong>in</strong>d his human self <strong>in</strong><br />

ascension so too would humans leave beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir animal selves.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> cases <strong>of</strong> Blavatsky and Pelley, while communications were most <strong>of</strong>ten received via<br />

automatic writ<strong>in</strong>g and disembodied voices, both also received visitations from fully embodied<br />

messengers. With <strong>the</strong> Ballards and <strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>r religions that followed <strong>the</strong>m, embodied<br />

encounters between humans and extraterrestrial messengers <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong> frequency. Ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

exemplify<strong>in</strong>g a calculus via which self and O<strong>the</strong>r could not be fully co-present—one hav<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

be effaced to allow for <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r—<strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>r religions began to create a<br />

space that allowed for that co-presence. Of course <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>herent terror <strong>of</strong> this co-presence was<br />

greatly mitigated by <strong>the</strong> graciousness and physical beauty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

Such an encounter was more readily susta<strong>in</strong>ed when <strong>the</strong> O<strong>the</strong>r’s presence occasioned sensual<br />

pleasure and ease <strong>of</strong> recognition. The comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tendencies discussed above, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly alien nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> O<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g embodiedness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> encounter<br />

suggested a larger dynamic <strong>of</strong> burgeon<strong>in</strong>g strangeness, a dynamic that would beg<strong>in</strong> to shift <strong>the</strong><br />

basic narrative structure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> displaced utopian imag<strong>in</strong>ary follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> World War II.<br />

The end <strong>of</strong> World War II brought a new character to <strong>the</strong> fore—<strong>the</strong> fly<strong>in</strong>g saucer. A<br />

depersonalized, wholly space-age embodiment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> O<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> fly<strong>in</strong>g saucer cum unidentified<br />

fly<strong>in</strong>g object constituted both a fur<strong>the</strong>r embodiment or materialization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> O<strong>the</strong>r and a fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

estrangement <strong>of</strong> same. The UFO was more material <strong>in</strong> that it was evidently a mach<strong>in</strong>e, a product<br />
