occur, one might expect group members to become disillusioned and leave <strong>the</strong> group. Contrary<br />
to this expectation, <strong>in</strong>dividuals, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> events that directly contradict <strong>the</strong>ir beliefs, tend to<br />
reaffirm <strong>the</strong>ir faith and step up <strong>the</strong>ir efforts <strong>in</strong> recruit<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>rs to share <strong>the</strong>ir beliefs. 216<br />
With this<br />
basic conundrum <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> three authors happened upon Dorothy Mart<strong>in</strong> (referred to as Marian<br />
Keech <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> study) when a Chicago paper ran an item on <strong>the</strong> imm<strong>in</strong>ent catastrophe she had<br />
prophesied. With <strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong> several o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong> researchers became members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> group<br />
surround<strong>in</strong>g Mart<strong>in</strong> and entered <strong>in</strong>to several months <strong>of</strong> participant observation. The case <strong>of</strong><br />
Dorothy Mart<strong>in</strong> is <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> current context for a number <strong>of</strong> reasons, one be<strong>in</strong>g that she<br />
was part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> contactee “ma<strong>in</strong>stream”—contactees with mystical lean<strong>in</strong>gs who communicated<br />
with extraterrestrial <strong>in</strong>telligences via traditional occult means. Mart<strong>in</strong>’s contact with higher alien<br />
<strong>in</strong>telligences took place through automatic writ<strong>in</strong>g. Her case is extremely well documented <strong>in</strong><br />
that When Prophecy Fails provides an extensive first hand account <strong>of</strong> her and <strong>the</strong> group that<br />
came to surround her. Also exceptionally, <strong>the</strong> account sets out nei<strong>the</strong>r to prove <strong>the</strong> veracity <strong>of</strong><br />
Mart<strong>in</strong>’s claims <strong>of</strong> extraterrestrial contact nor to debunk those claims. The question <strong>of</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />
<strong>the</strong> groups’ beliefs are true or false is largely beside <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t. The more <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g question is<br />
what do <strong>the</strong>ir beliefs mean, imply or do. It is, <strong>of</strong> course, <strong>the</strong> latter approach—com<strong>in</strong>g to Mart<strong>in</strong>’s<br />
group and <strong>the</strong>ir beliefs as a text to unpack versus imag<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same as a series <strong>of</strong> facts to be<br />
verified or debunked—that <strong>in</strong>forms <strong>the</strong> project you are read<strong>in</strong>g at present. F<strong>in</strong>ally, Mart<strong>in</strong>’s case<br />
is <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> that <strong>the</strong> messages communicated by her contacts provide clear examples <strong>of</strong> many<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key tropes <strong>of</strong> contact lore.<br />
Dorothy Mart<strong>in</strong>’s story began when she awoke early one w<strong>in</strong>ter morn<strong>in</strong>g with a strange<br />
t<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g feel<strong>in</strong>g runn<strong>in</strong>g up her arm and a strong feel<strong>in</strong>g that “someone was try<strong>in</strong>g to get my<br />
216 A dynamic similar to <strong>the</strong> contemporary situation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S., where <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> clearly dim<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g resources<br />
<strong>the</strong> response is to dramatically <strong>in</strong>crease levels <strong>of</strong> consumption.<br />
