Jehovah, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> East and Mideast have at last reached <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> retirement.” 219<br />

The new bible, entitled OAHSPE (O=earth, AH=sky, SPE=spirit) was quite long (some 1008<br />

pages), and provided details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> higher and lower heavens for <strong>the</strong> preced<strong>in</strong>g<br />

24,000 years as well as a brief history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 55,000 years prior. OAHSPE captured both <strong>the</strong><br />

critical attitude taken toward traditional religion by <strong>the</strong> displaced utopian tradition and <strong>the</strong> sense<br />

<strong>of</strong> human div<strong>in</strong>ity so central to <strong>the</strong> New Age. Between her exposures to Theosophy, <strong>the</strong> Great I<br />

AM and OAHSPE, Mart<strong>in</strong> was well versed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> notion that higher truths emerged through<br />

celestial dictation.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g her <strong>in</strong>itial experience with automatic writ<strong>in</strong>g, Dorothy Mart<strong>in</strong> began receiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

messages from more exalted personages. Primarily <strong>the</strong>se messages orig<strong>in</strong>ated with be<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

resid<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> planets Clarion and Cerus; be<strong>in</strong>gs Dorothy would come to know as <strong>the</strong><br />

“Guardians.” Note that <strong>the</strong>se be<strong>in</strong>gs no longer claim <strong>the</strong>ir po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> orig<strong>in</strong> as Venus or Mars, two<br />

planets that figure largely <strong>in</strong> earlier occult/extraterrestrial lore. This was <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>the</strong> case as<br />

empirical knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two latter planets <strong>in</strong>creased. Among <strong>the</strong>se Guardians was Sananda, a<br />

figure dest<strong>in</strong>ed to become her primary <strong>in</strong>terlocutor. 220<br />

Sananda, it turned out, was none o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than <strong>the</strong> current <strong>in</strong>carnation <strong>of</strong> Jesus Christ—“his new name hav<strong>in</strong>g been adopted with <strong>the</strong><br />

beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘new cycle’ or age <strong>of</strong> light.” 221<br />

Here aga<strong>in</strong> we see <strong>the</strong> figure <strong>of</strong> Christ salvaged<br />

via <strong>the</strong> materialization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spiritual—cast<strong>in</strong>g him as an extraterrestrial. Jesus is alive; he just<br />

lives on ano<strong>the</strong>r planet.<br />

Texas: Liv<strong>in</strong>g Truth Publishers, 1990) 231.<br />

220 Note <strong>the</strong> slight variation on “Ananda,” a H<strong>in</strong>du term for bliss. An element <strong>of</strong> orientalism persists <strong>in</strong> Dorothy<br />

Mart<strong>in</strong>’s philosophy, recall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Eastern lean<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> its n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century <strong>the</strong>osophical predecessor.<br />
