<strong>the</strong>ir obedience to a female leader and <strong>the</strong>ir highly demonstrative style <strong>of</strong> worship - <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
ecstatic dance, xenoglossy and div<strong>in</strong>e revelation - did not endear <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong>ir neighbors.<br />
The Shakers were no strangers to communication with <strong>the</strong> spirit world. “Mo<strong>the</strong>r Ann”<br />
was subject to visionary communication with Christ (<strong>of</strong> whom she claimed to be <strong>the</strong> female<br />
embodiment) as well as angels and earlier Shaker founders who had passed on and she <strong>of</strong>ten<br />
communicated with her followers after her own death <strong>in</strong> 1784. As fur<strong>the</strong>r evidence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
precedence <strong>of</strong> such spectral communication, <strong>the</strong> congregation as a whole was subject to ecstatic<br />
behaviors that bore all <strong>the</strong> earmarks <strong>of</strong> possession. But it was <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> 1837-1847,<br />
alternately known as <strong>the</strong> New Era, Mo<strong>the</strong>r Ann’s Second Appear<strong>in</strong>g or Mo<strong>the</strong>r’s Work that led<br />
Shaker Elder Frederick W. Evans (who converted after experienc<strong>in</strong>g a fiery vision which showed<br />
him emerg<strong>in</strong>g whole but for <strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> his genitals) to claim that Spiritualism had begun with <strong>the</strong><br />
Shakers. 47<br />
It was dur<strong>in</strong>g this period that <strong>the</strong> group experienced a highly <strong>in</strong>tense period <strong>of</strong><br />
spiritual communication.<br />
On August 16, 1837, a group <strong>of</strong> three young girls <strong>in</strong> Watervliet fell trembl<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />
ground - s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g songs <strong>in</strong> unknown languages (more recall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> crise <strong>of</strong> Mesmer than <strong>the</strong><br />
somnambulism <strong>of</strong> Puységur). Upon emerg<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong>ir trance, <strong>the</strong> three claimed to have been<br />
visited by <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r Ann, follow<strong>in</strong>g which visitation <strong>the</strong>y undertook a heavenly<br />
journey guided by angels. Follow<strong>in</strong>g this <strong>in</strong>cident <strong>the</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> Believers entered <strong>in</strong>to a ten<br />
year period <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensive communication with <strong>the</strong> spirit world dur<strong>in</strong>g which Believers <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />
Shaker communities became “<strong>in</strong>struments” (werkzeugen), communicat<strong>in</strong>g with, aside from<br />
Mo<strong>the</strong>r Ann, “Jesus, Mary Magdalene, St. Paul, Columbus, George Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, Napoleon,<br />
Queens Isabella and Elizabeth I, Alexander <strong>the</strong> Great, William Penn, The Marquis de Lafayette,<br />
martyred sa<strong>in</strong>ts, biblical figures, Indians, Ch<strong>in</strong>ese, Arabs, Negroes and Mohammed. Native<br />
<strong>American</strong> Spirit controls were especially popular, caus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> medium to whoop, dance and<br />
smoke <strong>the</strong> peace pipe.” 48<br />
This cohort <strong>of</strong> celebrity dead was soon to make itself known to <strong>the</strong><br />
