desired utopian state. The O<strong>the</strong>rs communicate <strong>the</strong>ir wisdom via particular <strong>in</strong>terlocutors who are<br />

characterized by heightened levels <strong>of</strong> sensitivity and <strong>of</strong>ten ambiguous gender identity. Said<br />

<strong>in</strong>terlocutors generally enter <strong>in</strong>to some k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> trance state <strong>in</strong> order to receive communications<br />

from <strong>the</strong> O<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

The O<strong>the</strong>rs, with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “grays” <strong>of</strong> alien abduction, present <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> a<br />

recognizably human form. They impart a message po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> shortcom<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> current<br />

social reality and <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g a vision <strong>of</strong> achieved perfection. While <strong>the</strong> O<strong>the</strong>rs are recognizably<br />

human, <strong>the</strong>ir humanity is tempered by its transcendence <strong>of</strong> animal be<strong>in</strong>g. Their pr<strong>of</strong>fered utopian<br />

displaced utopian imag<strong>in</strong>ary—Pelley’s mental radio, <strong>the</strong> Ballards’ light and sound ray, and <strong>the</strong><br />

surveillance described by Adamski’s contacts. All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above spoke to <strong>the</strong> desire to materialize<br />

<strong>the</strong> spiritual, imag<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a material technological bridge between <strong>the</strong> worlds <strong>of</strong> reason and spirit.<br />

The appearance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UFO added an apparently mechanical transport that allowed <strong>the</strong> O<strong>the</strong>r’s<br />

passage to Earth and provided a vehicle for <strong>the</strong> earthl<strong>in</strong>g contactee’s journeys to utopian<br />
