In <strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>r scenario, <strong>the</strong> surveillance under which we unknow<strong>in</strong>gly labored was<br />

benign. Our spectral overseers worked to nudge us toward realiz<strong>in</strong>g our potential as a species<br />

and away from squander<strong>in</strong>g our birthright. So, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> paranoid version, why are we be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

watched? In one scenario, <strong>the</strong> watchers/abductors are be<strong>in</strong>gs whose home planet and genetic l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

are exhausted. They want noth<strong>in</strong>g less than our blood and our land. These aliens are bent on<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r sapp<strong>in</strong>g or usurp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> earth and its <strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>of</strong> its vitality, whe<strong>the</strong>r through <strong>the</strong><br />

creation <strong>of</strong> an alien-human hybrid whose emergence will eclipse both “parent” species (a<br />

scenario whose resonance with fears <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> end result <strong>of</strong> miscegenation is abundantly clear <strong>in</strong><br />

science fiction novels like Octavia Butler’s Xenogenesis) or through a broader pattern <strong>of</strong><br />

extract<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> vital life force <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth as liv<strong>in</strong>g organism (as per Wilhelm Reich’s notion that<br />

UFO activity is directly l<strong>in</strong>ked to <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> desertification, <strong>the</strong> ongo<strong>in</strong>g encroachment <strong>of</strong><br />

desert onto surround<strong>in</strong>g, arable land - ei<strong>the</strong>r through extraction <strong>of</strong> orgone energy, or through<br />

dispersal <strong>of</strong> deadly orgone rays). 284<br />

This evil alien force is deadlocked <strong>in</strong> battle with <strong>the</strong> forces<br />

<strong>of</strong> good. The general understand<strong>in</strong>g is that this longstand<strong>in</strong>g, ongo<strong>in</strong>g battle is between <strong>the</strong> grays<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Nordics (<strong>the</strong> latter <strong>of</strong> whom we have met <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir guise as <strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>rs), and has<br />

earth as its unwitt<strong>in</strong>g battleground and humans as its unwitt<strong>in</strong>g proxies.<br />

The ambiguity evidenced by vary<strong>in</strong>g accounts (sometimes <strong>the</strong> Nordics are <strong>the</strong> bad guys<br />

and <strong>the</strong> grays <strong>the</strong> good, sometimes <strong>the</strong>y work <strong>in</strong> collaboration) <strong>of</strong> this battle both parallels and<br />

feeds upon <strong>the</strong> ambiguity seen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> attempts to br<strong>in</strong>g mean<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> abduction phenomenon.<br />

Are <strong>the</strong> horrific accounts <strong>of</strong> abduction evidence <strong>of</strong> a malefic force bent on <strong>the</strong> sow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

madness, dissipation and ultimately, destruction? Or do <strong>the</strong>y po<strong>in</strong>t ra<strong>the</strong>r to a long-term plan for<br />

humanity’s ultimate transcendence <strong>of</strong> its own terrestrial and embodied enslavement? On <strong>the</strong> face<br />
