mean<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> vanish<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t. A massive number <strong>of</strong> cases were reduced via what was <strong>of</strong>ten a<br />

rote application <strong>of</strong> quotidian explanations—light refraction, misidentified heavenly bodies and<br />

conventional aircraft. Those rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g cases were written <strong>of</strong>f as conspiracy, confabulation or<br />

madness <strong>of</strong> one variety or ano<strong>the</strong>r. Whatever may have been left over rema<strong>in</strong>ed because it<br />

slipped through <strong>the</strong> screen <strong>of</strong> rational explanation, emerg<strong>in</strong>g as unanswered questions. UFO<br />

sight<strong>in</strong>gs that were not expla<strong>in</strong>ed away rema<strong>in</strong>ed unexpla<strong>in</strong>ed. Abduction likewise enacted this<br />

deferment <strong>of</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g. The call for forgett<strong>in</strong>g by both alien and psycho<strong>the</strong>rapeutic <strong>in</strong>terlocutors,<br />

<strong>the</strong> general silence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> alien O<strong>the</strong>rs and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scrutability <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir actions all lent <strong>the</strong>mselves to<br />

this dynamic. Of course <strong>the</strong> absence or deferment <strong>of</strong> stable mean<strong>in</strong>g also suggests its obverse.<br />

The saucer and/or abduction as signifier without clear signified functioned as speculative eng<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

The absence <strong>of</strong> def<strong>in</strong>itive explanation allowed for multiple and contradictory explanations.<br />

The basic narrative that filled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> lost time was articulated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se early<br />

sessions. Betty and Barney were flagged down by figures <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> roadway, led onto <strong>the</strong> await<strong>in</strong>g<br />

craft and subjected to physical exam<strong>in</strong>ations on different parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ship. Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ation, <strong>the</strong> two were returned to <strong>the</strong>ir car with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>junction that <strong>the</strong>y would recall noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> experience. Fur<strong>the</strong>r details would emerge <strong>in</strong> later sessions, but <strong>the</strong> basic series <strong>of</strong> events<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed constant. Barney would recall fur<strong>the</strong>r elements <strong>of</strong> his exam<strong>in</strong>ation, <strong>the</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> sk<strong>in</strong><br />

samples via scrap<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> creatures runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir hands over his body <strong>in</strong> a way similar to that<br />

described by Betty. Aga<strong>in</strong>, this motif <strong>of</strong> medical exam<strong>in</strong>ation, which would become a standard<br />

trope <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> abduction narrative, spoke to a number <strong>of</strong> basic matters. It placed <strong>the</strong> abductee <strong>in</strong> a<br />

subservient position, rendered <strong>the</strong>m as an object to be observed and assessed, and underl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />

fundamental embodiedness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> experience. Aside from moments <strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>, it is rare that we are<br />

so aware <strong>of</strong> our bodies as organisms than when <strong>the</strong> object <strong>of</strong> medical scrut<strong>in</strong>y. The exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
