potential public responses to <strong>the</strong> flurry <strong>of</strong> reported sight<strong>in</strong>gs, it was clearly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
federal government to <strong>of</strong>fer an <strong>of</strong>ficial explanation for <strong>the</strong> phenomenon. After some 20 years <strong>of</strong><br />
research ta<strong>in</strong>ted by <strong>the</strong> overrid<strong>in</strong>g concern <strong>of</strong> “national security”—both research and ta<strong>in</strong>t to be<br />
discussed below—various <strong>in</strong>dependent factions arose to carry out an ostensibly less partisan<br />
research program. One heuristic both central to <strong>the</strong> enterprise <strong>of</strong> ufology and particularly<br />
reveal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> ufology’s self-imposed limitations emerged out <strong>of</strong> this latter phase. The range <strong>of</strong><br />
“close encounters” def<strong>in</strong>ed by J. Allen Hynek carved out a set <strong>of</strong> cases that were someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a<br />
departure from those thus far discussed as constitutive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> displaced utopian imag<strong>in</strong>ary. As<br />
we shall see, follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> model <strong>of</strong> “close encounters,” mean<strong>in</strong>gful communication between<br />
human and O<strong>the</strong>r was beyond <strong>the</strong> pale <strong>of</strong> “traditional” ufology. Hynek’s heuristic will provide a<br />
guide to both ufology and UFO encounters up to, but not <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> contact.<br />
After a discussion <strong>of</strong> ufology, <strong>the</strong> chapter will <strong>the</strong>n proceed to a discussion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second<br />
element <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> post-saucerian displaced utopian imag<strong>in</strong>ary under consideration—<strong>the</strong> ongo<strong>in</strong>g<br />
saga <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>rs. The development <strong>of</strong> a connection between <strong>the</strong> UFO and <strong>the</strong> ongo<strong>in</strong>g<br />
discourse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>rs was uneven. In <strong>the</strong> decades follow<strong>in</strong>g World War II, <strong>the</strong>re were<br />
both <strong>in</strong>stances <strong>in</strong> which contactees cont<strong>in</strong>ued to convey communiqués from extraterrestrial<br />
entities yet made no mention <strong>of</strong> UFO’s and cases where saucers whisked contactees away to<br />
stellar dest<strong>in</strong>ations. In <strong>the</strong>se latter cases, <strong>the</strong> UFO made no mean<strong>in</strong>gful addition to <strong>the</strong> space<br />
bro<strong>the</strong>r myth, merely serv<strong>in</strong>g as a mode <strong>of</strong> transport. Yet while space bro<strong>the</strong>r narratives seemed<br />
unconcerned with <strong>the</strong> novelty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> saucer’s arrival <strong>the</strong> advent <strong>of</strong> physical travel versus <strong>the</strong><br />
expedients <strong>of</strong> trance-based communication did speak to <strong>the</strong> previously discussed dynamic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g embodiment <strong>of</strong> communication between human and O<strong>the</strong>r. The chapter treats two<br />
particular cases from <strong>the</strong> lore <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>r, one that enacted <strong>the</strong> dynamic whereby <strong>the</strong><br />
