David E. Mack, a Harvard tra<strong>in</strong>ed and based psychiatrist, is perhaps <strong>the</strong> most “legitimate”<br />

proponent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> alien abduction. Given his longtime <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> “non-ord<strong>in</strong>ary” states<br />

<strong>of</strong> consciousness, his <strong>of</strong>t-stated distrust <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “western m<strong>in</strong>d” and his collaboration with such<br />

unorthodox researchers as Stanislav Gr<strong>of</strong> (early psychedelics researcher and found<strong>in</strong>g figure <strong>of</strong><br />

transpersonal psychology), he still draws skepticism from debunkers. While <strong>in</strong>itially skeptical <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> work be<strong>in</strong>g done by Bud Hopk<strong>in</strong>s, Mack became <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong><br />

abduction after meet<strong>in</strong>g with Hopk<strong>in</strong>s and some <strong>of</strong> his subjects. Mack’s 1994 Abductions, based<br />

on his cl<strong>in</strong>ical work with abductees, was widely read and reviewed. 281<br />

While Mack was<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduced to abduction studies by Bud Hopk<strong>in</strong>s and thus is <strong>in</strong> some sense <strong>the</strong> former’s protégé,<br />

<strong>the</strong> two part ways on a basic issue. While Hopk<strong>in</strong>s ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s that <strong>the</strong> phenomenon <strong>of</strong> abduction<br />

is at best negative and at worst nefarious, Mack ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s that <strong>the</strong> overall effect <strong>of</strong> abduction a<br />

potentially utopian one. Both, however, cont<strong>in</strong>ue to agree on <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> abduction and, more<br />

importantly to our current discussion, <strong>the</strong> centrality <strong>of</strong> hypnosis <strong>in</strong> reveal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

phenomenon. As <strong>in</strong> all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cases previously discussed, <strong>the</strong> rational m<strong>in</strong>d must first be<br />

disarmed via trance for material that is banished by materialist hegemony to surface.<br />

The events that transpired dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Hills’ two hours <strong>of</strong> lost time were revealed over <strong>the</strong><br />

course <strong>of</strong> six months and twenty sessions <strong>of</strong> hypno<strong>the</strong>rapy. The content <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se memories<br />

revealed some changes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> human-alien communication nexus— changes that emerged with<br />

<strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> saucer and agents <strong>of</strong> change from afar. The most novel<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se is <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> terror as a constant and central experiential component <strong>in</strong> alien-<br />
