paranoia <strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r context but <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>rs, it was merely an <strong>in</strong>strument <strong>of</strong><br />

use <strong>in</strong> guid<strong>in</strong>g humans toward <strong>the</strong> perfection <strong>the</strong>y desired. The space bro<strong>the</strong>rs wanted noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more than to help humans mend <strong>the</strong> error <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir ways, but <strong>the</strong>y could not force <strong>the</strong>m. Under<br />

universal law “each <strong>in</strong>dividual, each group <strong>of</strong> mank<strong>in</strong>d, all <strong>in</strong>telligent life on each world, must<br />

decide its own dest<strong>in</strong>y without <strong>in</strong>terference from ano<strong>the</strong>r. Counsel, yes. Instruction, yes. But<br />

<strong>in</strong>terference to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> destruction, never.” 252<br />

Adamski <strong>of</strong>fered one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first full expressions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>r narrative.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to him, humans had long been under <strong>the</strong> observation <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tergalactic forces that saw<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir potential and had <strong>the</strong>ir best <strong>in</strong>terests at heart. But humans were <strong>in</strong> danger <strong>of</strong> destroy<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves and upsett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> balance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> universe. Thus <strong>the</strong> aliens were tak<strong>in</strong>g an<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly active role and were here to help humans mend <strong>the</strong>ir ways. They were k<strong>in</strong>d and<br />

beautiful and lov<strong>in</strong>g—everyth<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> grays, who we will first encounter <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next chapter,<br />

are not.<br />

The story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> contactee and <strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>rs cont<strong>in</strong>ues to <strong>the</strong> present day. The same<br />

<strong>the</strong>mes <strong>of</strong> imm<strong>in</strong>ent catastrophe and <strong>the</strong> potential emergence <strong>of</strong> a new golden age still flow<br />

through channeled messages to <strong>the</strong> faithful, <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g visions <strong>of</strong> a world transformed. In turn, <strong>the</strong><br />

articulations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong>mes cont<strong>in</strong>ue to draw upon <strong>the</strong> bedrock <strong>of</strong> Spiritualism and Theosophy.<br />

The space bro<strong>the</strong>r contactee did little to alter <strong>the</strong> trope <strong>of</strong> redemption from afar developed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century—primarily chang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> orig<strong>in</strong> to o<strong>the</strong>r planets and add<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

contemporary socio-political gloss. In turn, <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fly<strong>in</strong>g saucer on <strong>the</strong> scene did little<br />

to change established patterns. It did, however, <strong>in</strong> its <strong>in</strong>vocation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technical—we are talk<strong>in</strong>g<br />
