'compatible' with the case mark<strong>in</strong>g on the verbal argument. Warlp<strong>in</strong> has a split ergative<br />

system sensitive to the person hierarchy. The case on first <strong>and</strong> second person clitic<br />

pronouns follows a nom<strong>in</strong>ative/accusative (NOM-ACC) case system, while the case on<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>als is assigned under an ergativdabsolutive (ERG-ABS) system. The case which<br />

appears on the arguments is cailed grammatical case (G-case). The G-cases are NOM<br />

ACC <strong>and</strong> DAT. Nom<strong>in</strong>als have primary or secondary lexical case (L-case). The prirnary<br />

L-cases are ERG, ABS <strong>and</strong> DAT. The secondary Lsases are LOCATIVE. PERLATIVE,<br />

ALLATIVE, ELATIVE, etc. Only the primary L-cases can be co-<strong>in</strong>dexed to the clitic<br />

arguments. Jel<strong>in</strong>ek called these nom<strong>in</strong>als adargumental adjuncts, s<strong>in</strong>ce they give more<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation about the referent of a clitic argument. Nom<strong>in</strong>als with secondary L-case<br />

cannot be co-<strong>in</strong>dexed with a clitic pronoun, but must be licensed by a case particle phrase<br />

or postposition. These nom<strong>in</strong>als are called adsentential adjuncts.<br />

Jel<strong>in</strong>ek's l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g mle follows <strong>in</strong> (15) <strong>and</strong> a chart of case-cornpatibility between G-<br />

case (on arguments) <strong>and</strong> L-case (on nom<strong>in</strong>als) is presented <strong>in</strong> (16):<br />

A chic pronoun may be co-<strong>in</strong>dexed with a nom<strong>in</strong>al, provid<strong>in</strong>g the L-case of the<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>al <strong>and</strong> the G-case of the clitic pronoun are compntible (assign<strong>in</strong>g a dist<strong>in</strong>ct<br />

<strong>in</strong>dex to each clitic).<br />

a. NOM G-case is compatible with ABS <strong>and</strong> ERG L-case.<br />

b. ACC G-case is compatible with ABS <strong>and</strong> DAT L-case.<br />

c. DAT G-case is compatible with DAT L-case.
