These verbs which may occur with A-doubl<strong>in</strong>g clauses have semantic properties <strong>in</strong><br />

common. They may al1 be ciassified as some sort of 'mentai action. ' This type of verb<br />

characterîstically occurs with complement clauses <strong>in</strong> other ianguages. At this po<strong>in</strong>t,<br />

however, I must leave the semantic properties aside, <strong>and</strong> am concentrat<strong>in</strong>g on the syntactic<br />

(argument) properties of this set of transitive verbs.
