When a proximate shifi occun, it is most comonly found between two sentence^.^' A<br />
SM is o b accompanied by a Wl A-doubl<strong>in</strong>g NP, f'requently with a demonstrative<br />
marker. However, a full NP is not necessary, <strong>and</strong> sometimes it is only the verbal <strong>in</strong>flection<br />
which <strong>in</strong>dicates that the obviation status of a participant has been changed.<br />
Example (75) illustrates a proximate shifi. In the first clause, the A-doubl<strong>in</strong>g NP<br />
wQkuy8.s 'bear' is proximate, as can be seen by exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the un<strong>in</strong>flected overt NP <strong>in</strong> the<br />
sentence, as well as the verbal morphology on the verb ayâw 'he(prox) is near', <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that the subject pro is s<strong>in</strong>gular <strong>and</strong> proxirnate. The NP takwâhnciwa 'the bull(s)(obv)' has<br />
a suffix -a <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g it is obviative. In the second sentence however, the proximate<br />
reference is assigned to one bull, which occurs as an unmarked A-doubl<strong>in</strong>g NP. The new<br />
proximate status of this referent is also reflected on the verb pasikôw 'he(prox) rises',<br />
where the suffix <strong>in</strong>dicates a s<strong>in</strong>gular proximate actor. The double bar ( II ) <strong>in</strong>dicates a<br />
proximate shift.<br />
