Example 3.1 (Prisoners Dilemma, Type 1)<br />

Two prisoners are suspected of a crime (which they both<br />

committed). They can choose to (1) cooperate with each<br />

other (not confessing to the crime) or (2) defect (giving<br />

evidence that the other was involved). Both cooperating<br />

(not confessing) gives them a shorter prison term than<br />

both defecting. But if only one of them defects (the<br />

betrayer), the other gets maximal prison term. The<br />

betrayer then has maximal payoff.<br />
