Definition 4.16 (Direct Mechanism)<br />

A direct mechanism wrt. a set of agents A and a set of<br />

outcomes O is a mechanism 〈Act, M〉 with<br />

A i = {µ i : µ i are utility functions }.<br />

But: agents may lie and not reveal their true utilities.<br />

Truthful or strategy-proof mechanism<br />

A mechanism is truthful (later also called strategy-proof)<br />

in dominant strategies, if for any utility profile, in the<br />

resulting game it is a dominant strategy for each agent to<br />

announce its true utility function.
