Background<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g sections will describe the <strong>in</strong>dustry, with particular attention to two<br />
important aspects—export competitiveness and <strong>in</strong>bound <strong>in</strong>vestment—as they relate to the<br />
competitive factors affect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tegrated production of cotton woven apparel among the<br />
<strong>ASEAN</strong> countries. The cotton woven apparel <strong>in</strong>dustry encompasses an assortment of<br />
different apparel items, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the production of most cotton trousers (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g jeans<br />
and khakis), as well as cotton woven blouses and shirts (such as men’s dress shirts).<br />
Other products <strong>in</strong>clude cotton woven shorts, jackets, dresses, skirts, and underwear.<br />
Although the <strong>in</strong>dustry’s exports account for a relatively small share of total <strong>ASEAN</strong><br />
textile and apparel exports (16 percent <strong>in</strong> 2008), the cotton woven apparel supply cha<strong>in</strong><br />
provides opportunities for <strong>in</strong>tegration across the <strong>ASEAN</strong> region. 17 This supply cha<strong>in</strong><br />
